Are You Prepared for a Ransomware Attack?

Ransomware is a very destructive attack when launched against businesses.  There have been so many news headlines lately about ransomware that you would think most businesses are well protected. But are they? Are you?

A study commissioned by Trend Micro  in March 2021 shows half of firms studied don’t have the technology to prevent or detect ransomware attacks.  The study interviewed 130 cyber professionals in mid-sized and large organisations in the United States.  Other glaring statistics found by this study include 16% of organizations reported no security incident types related to phishing and ransomware in the past 12 months, which means this is a huge problem for most organizations.

So, what should your organization be doing to prepare for a ransomware attack?  The paper recommends your organization undertake these 3 steps:

  1. Implement multifactor authentication
  2. Quickly patch security vulnerabilities
  3. Store data backups offsite and offline

The Trend Micro paper acknowledges that no cybersecurity strategy can completely prevent cyber attacks, however, if you follow their guidelines and prepare for an attack, it can make the recovery much more effective and limit damage.
